Managing a small business is challenging – especially when it comes to money.
Spreadsheets, scattered receipts, and outdated tools make it hard to stay organized and really understand your cash flow.
For many, managing finances becomes a source of stress rather than clarity.
SmartFin was designed to change that – with a simple, focused, and intuitive experience for your day-to-day financial tasks.

I started the project by interviewing small
business owners and freelancers
to understand how they manage their
finances and what challenges they face.
Most track their finances manually
using spreadsheets, piles of receipts,
handwritten notes, and various disconnected apps.
They often lack a clear picture of their financial
status and feel overwhelmed.
Users rely on tools like Excel, invoicing apps,
and even notebooks.
This scattered workflow is time-consuming,
confusing, and prone to errors.

Managing finances involves juggling spreadsheets, invoices, receipts, and messages – it’s hard to keep track.
Lack of financial clarity
Users don’t know how much they actually earn or spend — everything feels foggy.
Receipts are always lost
Paper receipts pile up or get lost before making it to the accountant.
I just want it to be simple
Most users don’t feel confident with numbers. They want one clear, easy-to-use tool.

Based on the interviews, I mapped and categorized the actions small business owners take when managing their finances. Once I identified those steps, I began designing the optimal user flow — one that simplifies the process and helps users stay in control of their financial tasks, all in one place.

Visualize the solution
Once I was satisfied with the architecuture, I started to work on the user interface itself. I love to start with a low fidelty sketch before creating high fidelity wireframes and prototyping in axure.
Homepage – where clarity begins
After mapping the user flow, I started sketching the homepage – the central place where users can get a quick overview of their financial status.
This screen was designed to present income, expenses, and client activity in a clean and structured way, helping users make decisions at a glance.
Logo
When I created the logo for SmartFin, I decided to incorporate the use of the letter ‘S’ along with arrows pointing in opposite directions, symbolizing the flow of money and dynamism. Additionally, the design represents stability and innovation.
Colour Palette
The SmartFin app's color palette combines a bold yellow with a calming blue, supported by white and light gray to create a professional yet approachable feel.

Welcome to the clear side of business
The final step was designing the user interface. I chose a clean and minimalist style to reflect clarity and professionalism, using soft colors, clear typography, and intuitive layout — helping users focus on what really matters: their finances.
Everything You Need, Right Here
When entering the homepage, the user immediately sees a clear summary of their financial status – including income, expenses, and recent client activity. From here, users can add a new expense or income, scan a receipt, or view detailed reports.
